Helping Children with Big Feelings: A Gentle Guide to Emotional Regulation

Big emotions are not bad.
They are a message from the body.

Whether your child feels angry, worried, overstimulated, or just plain overwhelmed, emotional regulation is the skill that helps them pause, understand what they’re feeling, and find a safe way to calm down.

That’s why I created my Emotional Regulation Bundle — not to stop feelings, but to teach children how to move through them.

This bundle was inspired by my daughter Ava and the many children I’ve supported who feel things deeply and need extra tools to stay grounded.

Why Emotional Regulation Matters

Children don’t always have the words to explain what’s happening inside.
Instead, emotions show up as:
• meltdowns
• frustration
• shutdowns
• anxiety
• or big reactions

Visual supports give children something steady to focus on when emotions are loud.

They help children:
• recognize their feelings
• feel safe
• and choose calming actions

Emotional regulation isn’t about being “good” — it’s about learning how to feel.

What’s Inside the Emotional Regulation Bundle

This bundle is a complete visual system designed to help children:
• identify emotions
• understand their bodies
• and practice calming strategies

It includes:

• Emoji Emotions Chart
• Ava & Eli Emotional Regulation Social Story
• Emotional Regulation Zones Chart
• Matching Coping Cards
• Breathing Visualization Box
• Mindful Counting Chart
• Yoga Stretches
• Grounding Technique
• Good Choices Visual Aid Booklet
• Mindful Art Journal

Each tool plays a different role in the learning process — and together, they create a powerful emotional support system.

How the Bundle Works

This system is designed to be taught gently, step by step.

1. Start with Feelings

The Emoji Emotions Chart introduces what emotions look like.
Children can point to how they feel each day during a simple check-in.

2. Read the Social Story

Ava & Eli’s story explains:
• what emotions are
• what they feel like in the body
• what the color zones mean
• and how to calm down

Stories make emotions easier to understand.

3. Use the Zones & Coping Cards

Children learn to:
• find their zone
• name their feeling
• choose a calming strategy

This turns emotions into action.

4. Practice and Reflect

The Mindful Art Journal provides 50 calming activities — enough for 6–12 months of gentle emotional growth.

Using the Calming Tools

The calming tools can be used in:
• a calming corner
• a bedroom
• a classroom
• or while out in public

The Good Choices Booklet offers visual reminders like:
• Safe hands
• Calm body
• Walking feet

The Breathing Box teaches slow breathing.
The Mindful Counting helps focus.
The Yoga Stretches release tension.
The Grounding Technique uses the five senses to bring children back to the present moment.

Why This Works

When children understand their feelings, they feel:
• less confused
• less overwhelmed
• more confident
• and more in control

This bundle doesn’t tell children to stop feeling —
it teaches them how to feel safely.

A Gentle Note to Parents
